IBEW 319 History

On October 1st, 1927 eleven Linemen and Line apprentices employed by the City of Saskatoon applied to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for a Charter to operate an IBEW Local Union. The Charter was issued for IBEW Local Union 319 that same month. Of the eleven members who signed the Charter application at least eight had held previous membership in the IBEW elsewhere and recognized the value of the International Union. Their experience was an asset in building IBEW Local 319. The desire to form their own electrical organization was due to the fact that proper concerns were not addressed the most important being safety. One in four Linemen never retired due to accidents on the job. Due to that fact insurance companies simply would not sell insurance to the electrical worker.
